As if you needed another reason…

Today is the “Grito de Dolores,” the actual Mexican Independence Day. As we all know Cinco de Mayo is a less important holiday in Mexico; it merely celebrates an important victory over the French (although geopolitically speaking the victory made it impossible for the French to back the Confederacy during the contemporaneous Civil War so it actually makes more sense for Americans to celebrate Cinco de Mayo but now you’re already bored). It’s kind of like if Americans celebrated on the day Washington crossed the Delaw… bad example. But break out your sombreros and maracas anyway, and say “Happy Independence Day” to our friends to the south. Happy weekend, everyone.
