Peter Thiel (Paypal co-founder) has given the Seasteading institute $1.25 Million.

Thiel is on the Bilderberg Group steering committee, so enjoy that paranoia. He also said “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible,” (Source) and “While I don’t think any class of people should be disenfranchised, I have little hope that voting will make things better,” (Source) so he’s outside of the political mainstream by a fair amount. Of course, folks who’ve seen The Social Network may remember that he gave Facebook $500,000 for a 10.2% stake in the company in 2004, so he’s pretty crafty too.

I think seasteading is neat as a concept, but I’m also a 12 year old on the inside and think that pirates and getting off on technicalities are neat as concepts. Of course seasteading never works because the sea is cruel (as the video suggests) and actually believe it or not flouting the Westphalian order is not a great way to make money. I do think that we’ll see a revolution in the way we think about government in my lifetime, but I think that will come as private companies make the leap into space.
