“No Apparent Esthetic Value”

If not for Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell’s follow up comments there probably wouldn’t be a story here. Guy takes pictures of oil refinery, police officer asks what he’s doing, end of story. But then there’s this policy of “report[ing]…. [people taking pictures or video] with no apparent esthetic value.” First, I’m uncomfortable with any policy with that much vagueness and wiggle room, especially where speech is involved. Second, I immediately doubt the aesthetic judgment of someone who chooses “esthetic” over “aesthetic.” I mean, come on.
